Alexander Arndt obtained Bachelor of Engineering in Product Development and Design from Koblenz University of Applied Sciences (Hochschule Koblenz) in 2010. Afterwards Mr. Arndt studied MPE (Mechanical and Process Engineering) at the Technical University of Darmstadt until 2013. His master's thesis involved conceptual design of a compatibility test for mixed material bodies in CATIA V5. Since March 2013 he has been employed as a research associate at the Department of Computer Integrated Design (DiK).

From the summer semester 2013 until April 2014 Mr. Arndt supervised the lecture “Virtual Product Development C” in the master's program. At present, he is responsible for the lecture “Introduction 3D-Printing and Additive Manufacturing”.

Additive Manufacturing

Primary research focus of Mr. Arndt is additive manufacturing. Additive manufacturing technologies are currently subject to ongoing development. This results in a comprehensive examination of those processes from the research perspective. Therefore, the digital process chain including all relevant process steps is profoundly illuminated at DiK. The process chain involves creating computer-based 3D-CAD models, preparation of the construction process, the physical construction process as well as the post-processing and the application of the component. Here Mr. Arndt works on solutions for the optimization and further development of additive manufacturing processes. Moreover, he is responsible for the additive manufacturing equipment available at DiK. This equipment can be used for student projects or research projects to manufacture components by means of Fused Layer Modeling (Component Material: ABS). AutoAdd – Automation of the process chain for customized additive manufacturing

Since mid-2016, Mr. Arndt has been managing and working on the project “Automation of the process chain for customized additive manufacturing (AutoAdd)”. The project was recommended and launched as part of the funding measure LOEWE 3. Together with the partner companies Kegelmann Technik GmbH (Rodgau, Jügesheim) and the :em engineering methods AG (Darmstadt), a digital, automated and integrated process chain will be established as part of the project. The DiK is responsible for project management and tasks in the methodical approach and the development of information technology solutions. Methodical support and support is provided throughout the project period (01.07.2016 to 30.06.2018) and in all work packages. In addition, the DiK is responsible for the entire concept development.

Efficient Factory 4.0

Mr. Arndt is the manager of the implementation project “Efficient factory 4.0” (Effiziente Fabrik 4.0) on the part of the Department of Computer Integrated Design (DiK). He is also the contact person concerning this project. The “Efficient Factory 4.0” is a research project, which was approved by the Hessian Ministry of Economics, Energy, Transport and Regional Development. The Project is financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), represented by the WiBank, within the framework of the operational program for promotion of regional competitiveness and employment in Hessen.

The aim of the project is the analysis, development and implementation of Industrie 4.0 technologies for building a progressive resource-efficient learning factory. As the first part of the research project, the Good-Practice examples from German companies are identified, analyzed and evaluated. Subsequently, the selected processes will be considered for applicability to the existing Learning Factory, as well as concepts for implementation will be developed. Some important factors at this point are the level of networking of the possible future technologies, allocation within the life cycle and consideration of the type of company. By doing so the “Efficient Factory 4.0” aims to illustrate the potential of Industrie 4.0 to all interest groups. The “Efficient Factory 4.0” should demonstrate the possible extensions of an existing production environment in order for the user to be fit for the resource-effective and efficient production of tomorrow.
